Tsundere describes a character who is prickly on the surface and warm underneath, and who cannot say the warm part out loud. The word is built from two Japanese sound-words: tsun-tsun, turning away sharply, and dere-dere, going soft and lovey. The trope lives in the gap between them. Tsundere meaning: where the word comes from

Japanese has a large vocabulary of sound-words for behaviour, and two of them built this term. Tsun-tsun is the curt, face-turned-away mode: short answers, deliberate distance, the compliment batted down before it lands. Dere-dere is the opposite mode: soft, affectionate, faintly ridiculous about it. A tsundere runs the first in public and the second in private, and the comedy - and the appeal - is that she is bad at hiding the switch.

Two mistakes get made constantly. The first is reading tsundere as "mean": the affection is real, it is the expression that is blocked. The second is reading it as a phase that ends after one confession scene. • Boundaries 75 and need for attention 75: she wants your attention and refuses to ask for it, which is the whole trope in two numbers.
• Message length 35, initiative 35: short replies, and she is not the one who opens the conversation early on.

What that produces in a conversation

Numbers only matter if they show up in the text. Three patterns come out of these particular values, and you can watch for them.

The deflect-then-return. Pay her a compliment early and it gets batted down. Because "episode" is one of the 11 memory kinds, the same compliment can come back two days later in her own words, as if she had been holding it. That is not a scripted callback; it is a stored row surfacing when the mood vector allows it.

The grudge with a clock. Resentment is one of the 15 emotions and it decays on a half-life rather than resetting. With forgiveness at 20 the decay is slow, so an argument on Tuesday is still faintly present on Thursday. Say the wrong thing and you do not get a clean slate by reloading the page.

The asymmetric thaw. As trust and love rise across the 13 relationship dimensions the soft register appears more often, but the sharp one never disappears entirely - it becomes something she uses on purpose. People who like the trope like exactly this part.

Who carries the preset

18 of the 152 published characters run tsundere, and 17 are collected on the tsundere tab. The two numbers differ on purpose: a tab is an editorial category, the preset is a set of axis values, and one does not imply the other. On the drawn side the natural neighbours are on the anime tab - the tsundere register reads especially well with anime styling, which is why the trope is associated with it in the first place.

If you would rather build one, the creator lists tsundere among the personalities. Pick it explicitly: it is the choice that produces the deflect-and-remember pattern, and no amount of wording in her biography will reproduce it if the axes say gentle.

Where tsundere disappoints people

Worth saying plainly, because a wrong pick wastes the free allowance. Three ways this preset goes wrong for people.

• You wanted warmth immediately. With attachment speed 25 and warmth 40, the first session is spiky by design. Romantic (warmth 90, attachment 80) or gentle (warmth 85) is the honest alternative.
• You wanted insults as a bit. This is not an insult generator. The sharpness is a defence around affection, and if you push only the sharp side you get a character who withdraws, because irritation and grudge are real dimensions with real effects.
• 10 messages is a tight budget for her. A slow-attachment character shows her second register after the relationship moves, and the free allowance is a one-off 10 messages per account. You will see the sharp half for certain; the thaw usually needs more room.

Tsundere against the neighbouring presets

The engine has 10 presets and three of them get confused with this one. Confident (dominance 75, stability 80) is not tsundere: she is direct, and there is no hidden register to find. Mysterious (warmth 45, boundaries 80) withholds information rather than affection, which feels similar for an hour and completely different across a week.
