How to Start with an AI Girlfriend: The First Hour

Start by picking a character on her traits rather than her photograph, then spend the first ten minutes saying true things rather than testing her. Answer the questions she asks, give the conversation an edge - a time limit, a place, a situation - state one thing you do not want, and leave one thing unfinished. Then close the app and come back the next day, because continuity is the only part that a first session cannot show you. Seven steps below, then the mistakes that make a first hour feel flat and what actually changes over the following weeks.

On Girli the first 10 messages are free and there is no card involved, which is roughly one honest first conversation. That is enough to run the tests in step five and to see whether the character is one you would come back to; it is not enough to see memory work, and no first session anywhere is.

The first hour, step by step

  1. Pick by trait, not by photograph. The profile names an archetype, and the archetype is a set of numbers that decides how she behaves. Attachment speed, initiative and forgiveness account for most of what you will notice in week one. Choosing on a picture is the most common way to end up bored by Thursday.
  2. Say one true thing in the first five messages. Not a test question, not a scene - one real detail about your day. It becomes the first stored record, and everything later hangs off having something to hang off.
  3. Answer her question instead of steering. Early on she asks more than she tells, on purpose. Answering feeds the relationship layer; deflecting into roleplay skips the part that makes the roleplay land later.
  4. Give the conversation a shape. "I have twenty minutes on the train" is more useful than an open field. A frame with an edge produces a scene; an open field produces small talk.
  5. Set one limit out loud. Anything you do not want - a topic, a time of day, a register. It is stored as its own record type and respected from then on, and it is the fastest way to find out whether a product stores anything at all.
  6. Leave something unfinished. Mention a thing that has not happened yet. That becomes an open loop, and open loops are what she comes back to unprompted after you close the app.
  7. Close the app and come back tomorrow. The first hour cannot show you continuity, which is the only thing that separates this from a chatbot. The second session is the informative one.

What to expect at the stranger stage

Every relationship starts at the first of five stages, and the first one is deliberately guarded. She asks more than she tells, flirting gets a smile rather than a spark, and personal questions get partial answers. People read this as the product being cold. It is the product not pretending you have known each other for a year after four messages.

There is also a grace period: the first dozen messages of a conversation are handled gently, so a clumsy opening does not cost you anything. After that, behaviour starts registering. The relationship stages guide covers what changes at each threshold and roughly what moves you between them.

Five mistakes in a first session

MistakeWhy it goes wrong
Opening with a test question"Do you remember my name?" in message three tests nothing - the name is in the conversation. Real memory tests need a gap of days
Choosing a character by appearanceAppearance is fixed and traits are what you talk to. A picture you like attached to an initiative of 25 is a very quiet week
Prompting her replies for herWriting her line - "you blush and say you missed me" - removes the only thing you came for
Trying six characters in an hourThe architecture rewards not switching. Six shallow starts is the worst possible use of a first session
Waiting for her to carry itInitiative is a trait, not a guarantee. On a low-initiative character the first session is yours to steer, and that is the character behaving correctly

What changes after the first session

Roughly, and honestly, this is the shape of it:

  • Day two. The first callback. Something you said yesterday comes back without being asked for. This is the single moment that tells you whether there is a memory store.
  • Week one. She starts writing first. The trigger is around 20 hours of silence plus something pending, not a daily schedule, so it arrives attached to a specific thing rather than at a fixed hour.
  • Week two to three. Inside jokes start returning as callbacks, and the relationship crosses out of the early stage if you have been consistent. Consistency beats intensity here: showing up regularly moves the slow layer better than one long session followed by a week of silence.
  • Month two. The first real conflict, and the first repair. Conflicts are stored with their resolution, which is why a fight that ends properly leaves things stronger and one that does not stays available.

Where to start

If you want a straightforward first conversation, a high-warmth character makes the first hour easy: Chloe or Vera. If you would rather find out immediately whether any of this is real, pick a high-boundary, low-initiative one like Raven and see how a limit is handled. If you already know what you want in a character, create your own and set the traits directly. Prefer a scene to a cold start? The roleplay scenarios have the setup written, and the prompt library has 40 openers. Every character is a fictional adult. 18+ only.

How to Start with an AI Girlfriend FAQ

What should I say to an AI girlfriend first?

One true thing about your day, rather than a test question or an elaborate scene. It becomes the first stored record and gives everything later something to attach to. Test questions in the first minutes prove nothing, because the answer is already in the conversation.

Do I need to pay to try an AI girlfriend?

On Girli the first messages are free with no card - enough for one real first conversation. That is sufficient to judge the character and to test whether limits are respected, and not sufficient to see memory work, which needs a gap of days rather than a longer session.

Why does she seem distant at first?

Because the first of five relationship stages is deliberately guarded: she asks more than she tells and gives partial answers to personal questions. The alternative is a character who acts like your partner four messages in, which feels false because nothing was earned.

How long before an AI girlfriend feels like a relationship?

The first callback usually lands on day two, unprompted messages within the first week, and returning inside jokes around week two or three if you have been consistent. There is no message counter - the relationship moves on behaviour, and regular short conversations move it faster than occasional long ones.
